. legal immigration. we have to move forward with immigration reform, marco rubio. >> senator, forgive me for interrupting, but as we move forward on immigration, your words, are you prepared, and do you think a majority of republicans are prepared, to give some legal status, whether full citizenship or legal status, to the full 8 million people here in this country illegally? >> this is something that needs to be discussed and debating. we have been debating it and discussing within our policy lunches. marco rubio is raising a number of different ways we can deal with the issues we face on immigration. that's the backbone of our country. the sena i'm the son of immigrants, and thinking about this, my dad took me to john kennedy's inauguration when i was 8. he was a cement finisher, had to quit school in ninth grade. this country is built on hard working men and women, the sons and daughters of immigrants. immigration is key and important for our nation. >> senator barrassso, i appreciate your time. margaret, i want to start with you. cautious. republicans said let's get things done. but

like marco rubio, for instance, and others, and also you have the chamber of commerce, you have some republican vested interest. i would say the budget and immigration are the two areas, spending and immigration. >> can he get through some simple things on gun control, if not a ban on assault weapons. that might be impossible with republican caucus, but universal background checks? some smaller things that polls show most republicans around the country support. >> yeah, maybe. i don't know. i would support it. i can't speak for the others. i would think there is a chance that maybe on gun trafficking some things and it may be watered down somewhat, but he could at least make some progress. there could be a bill signing and you get people together and that could make it better for the next year and a half after that. >> i want to ask you something i know that seems unrelated but it is very important for the president. it's on foreign policy but it's on what's happening now in north africa. we had benghazi and now algeria and northern mali with the french. does he need to do more with

they are going to be able to get. the opportunity right now would be to call senator marco rubio in florida. if you look at their two proposals, they are not that far apart. if you wanted to solve this problem for the purpose of economic growth, more border security and to do what president obama wants, which i don't think is not -- he is not the only one who wants to provide to provide assurance younger people by parents if they were brought here illegally. i think if they were to bring in marco rubio they would get something nonpartisan done. other aren't that budget, i don't think there is a lot through this congress. they haven't passed a new budget in four years. a lot of new faces in washington as well especially on the senate side. >> shepard: sure. the polls suggest that the american people have moved a lot on gun control, at least since the tragedy at newtown. i'm wondering if you think there is any room for gun control legislation? be it smaller number of ammunition in magazines or the gun show loophole or anything that's possible? >> i thought that before president obama did the

want to look at marco rubio's proposal, because he would define his proposal as such. let's listen to mr. rubio for a moment. >> i have been tough on this issue, and border security, but it is getting better. the stats show it is getting better, and i think that they have a handle on it now, and i think that your program is fair, and so i want you and president obama to get on the phone and get this thing before it turns into a bloody mess. >> well, that is marco rubio talking, but who we saw speaking there is bill o'reilly, and let's move forward. sop apparently bill o'reilly and myself can sit together and get it done. is there going to be bipartisan support to get this issue through? >> yes. and remember the last time the voices in the tv world and the radio world were far right and you have to kill it. and now folks say, you have to get it done. and the u.s. chamber of commerce is working with labor to make it happen. we are going to make it happen, and marco rubio is talking about things that we have been talking about over 10 years, and the republicans are coming forward to s

that plays into republican arguments like marco rubio who said this today on fox. >> there is a second amendment. i didn't write the constitution. i believe in it. if you are going to do anything that impacts it. it better make some sense. here is the problem that i have by the president's own admission, the things that they're putting forward would have done nothing to prevent what happened, for example, in connecticut. >> and that's why top democratic senator is telling me privately he thinks it's much more likely that the president will not get a ban on assault weapons. but, instead, will get something that's less controversial like a national background check, having a system like that. that's more likely to go through, bill. >> bill: ed, thank you. ed henry at the white house tonight. victims and first responders have returned to the scene of the massacre in colorado. this after almost six months after a man opened fire inside of a crowded movie theater there they were attending a private ceremony at this hour. that includes the showing of a movie inside the very same building whe

"the washington post" editorial board writes about senator rubio's efforts at immigration reform saying, quote, the center piece of mr. rubio's plan, a pathway to citizenship with stages, is new for him. as a candidate for the senate in 2010, he denounced amnesty for immigrants without papers. his position now labels not with standing represents a shift. it also requires guts. mr. rubio one of just three hispanics in the senate has made clear he is willing to lead. the question in the coming months is whether his party's main stream in congress, in state capitals, can be coaxed toward moderation. what does senator rubio do about his colleagues over in the house of representatives? >> well, he is a key player and he is willing to work in coalition. i mean, right now in washington that is the key issue. are you willing to get over that one single threshold of working in coalition? do you think t
